Upcoming 3rd NY Brazilian Film Series at Cinema Village

May in Motion: Art, Music and Cinema

What is there to do in May? Explore outdoor activities such as visiting local neighborhood gardens and botanical gardens to enjoy the blooming flowers and observe the arrival of birds traveling thousands of miles from the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern Hemisphere. These migratory birds come in search of warmer waters to nest, mate and sing in the middle of the greenery landscapes that transform New York City each spring.

But what about discovering something unfamiliar, yet close to home? Tap into the complexities of music, stories, and creativity. The 3rd NY Brazilian Film Series at Cinema Village offers a window into the heart of Brazil—its people, pioneers, struggles, culture, and music. The documentary “Luiz Melodia – No Coração do Brasil”  directed by Alessandra Dorgan, follows the journey of Luiz Melodia, a musician who remained true to his artistic originality despite the challenges of a competitive industry and market. A child of the favelas, he rose to stardom by following his calling for music, composing songs that fused bossa nova, samba, blues, rock, and more, adding vibrant sounds to the cultural wealth of Brazil.

Brazil is known for its cultural diversity. Its music blends influences from Indigenous, African, and European rhythms into a vibrant fusion. Melodia's story brings to life the passion, talent, and determination especial minds pave for others to enjoy and be inspired to follow across borders. His journey inspires creators to persist, explore new inner talents, and savor the rewards of creative expression.

Film has the power to refresh the mind, spark curiosity, and invite us to ask new questions about the unfamiliar. NY Brazilian Film Series provides a unique opportunity for cultural exchange where audiences engage with beauty, sounds and storytelling.

Kudos to Roger Costa, founder of the New York Brazilian Film Festival, and his team for bringing people together to celebrate art and culture.
